Today was our first full day in Vienna. We had a leisurely morning that included a coffee at one of Vienna's lovely cafés - Cafe Sherl, featured in the movie Before Sunrise, and then did a little shopping. Saw a building riddled with bullet holes from the war which was really amazing.

We then had to check out of Hotel Beethoven and lug our bags onto the metro to the hotel we will be at tonight and tomorrow. This is our ninth hotel of the trip and we are starting to have trouble remembering our floor, room number and how to get to the bathroom in the night :)

After checking in, we headed downtown for lunch and another coffee, this time at Cafe Central, a really beautiful old cafe that used to be frequented by the likes of Hitler, Freud, Trotsky, and Kafka. Also had some apple strudel which was quite delicious.

We heard about cheap standing room tickets at the opera house, so we headed over there. Tickets were very cheap (4€) but they really packed us riffraff into a little space separated from the rest of the well-dressed opera folk. It was very hot and claustrophobic, but great view of the stage.
The opera crowd was a little more aggressive then we imagined, and a fistfight almost broke out when one man took out his camera ( you weren't supposed to take photos) and another man (in a full suit amongst us peasants) tried numerous times to violently get the guy to put his camera away. It was crazy!

After that, a lovely schnitzel dinner (thanks to Jane) and some beers for after.

Overall, we are enjoying Vienna very much. A beautiful, clean, safe- feeling city.
