What I did
Shanghai Zoo

We decided to spend our final day in Shanghai at the Zoo. We were a bit sceptical about going to a zoo in China, but we had heard that Shanghai zoo was the best in China.  The zoo is set in massive park like grounds, very pretty but difficult to negotiate with no clear set route around the whole park. I did enjoy seeing some of the animals that I hadn't seen before (especially the birds) but lots of the animal cages were smaller than I liked and did not appear to have enrichment type activities for the animals.  What was worst for us to see though was the attitude of the Chinese who were visiting the park.  There was no respect for the animals or their welfare or even the zoo rules.  No feeding signs were everywhere, and yet at every cage people threw food in (chips, bread etc).  There were also no zoo keepers to educate or stop people from doing this.  People would commonly bang on glass to try and make the animals move, or lift their children up over barriers to feed the monkeys – were not kidding about this, check out the pics!  Most of the animals were well used to food coming from the people outside the cage, and would all clamour and beg for food when people approached.  Some of the monkeys were so fat, and not many looked particularly happy.  It was a fairly disheartening day, and left us feeling a bit homesick for places where people obeyed signs, and where zoos are places where animals are respected.  It also didn’t help that we sometimes felt like we were on display too with lots of "covert" photos taken of us!
