Rolled into the Grand Canyon last night. Made it to our hotel room and scoped everything out here at the Best Western Premier. The hotel is really nice. In addition to a restaurant and gift shop, it has bowling, pool, an arcade and a sports bar. I guess they need to have a way to entertain people if they experience record low temperatures, like say today. The high was 21, expected low tonight is -11. Yeah, that is not a typo, minus 11.

Luckily we have plenty of warm clothes, so after breakfast we made the quick drive to the canyon. The roads were only mildly snowy/icy, so we had no trouble getting up there. I wasn't sure what to expect with it being so cold outside, but it turns out that the paved rim walk along the edge of the canyon had been cleared of snow and was a really easy walk. We parked at the visitors center and walked about 3 miles stopping here and there to take pictures. At the village area there are several lodges and restaurants. We knew the only appropriate thing to do at that point was stop for hot chocolate. From there we took the shuttle back to the visitors center and made our way back to the hotel.

The Grand Canyon was better than I had expected. It's sheer volume and immense size would make anyone feel small, but when you read about the billions of years that passed in its formation you realize that each of our lives are only the blink of an eye relative to the earth's history.

In the morning we pack up and head for Vegas. Stay warm wherever you are. We'll try to do the same here.
