It seems that every day presents a unique set of challenges and pleasant surprises. Yesterday, we spent about an hour trying to find a road on our map. We try to avoid the highways as much as possible, which sometimes requires linking together smaller roads that are less direct, but safer and more pleasant. These smaller roads vary in quality, so we were not too worried when the paved road became a dirt road. When the dirt road split into several dirt tracks, we questioned our wayfinding. As the dirt track passed by a noisy goose farm and became a faint depression between two plowed fields, we knew we were off the map but hoped that this might come out somewhere. When somewhere turned out to be a grassy clearing, we decided that this was indeed the end of the road. As we scratched our heads and gazed around for a clue, Bill noticed that we were nearing a prominent smokestack that we had passed....two towns back. OY.
Anyway, long story short, we backtracked back to that town, where we knew we could follow bigger roads and found the EuroVelo bike route (!) that led to a town and where we found a campground (which was closed for the season) but found a motel (which was unattended) but we found a girl who was at the motel for an art class who spoke English and had a cell phone and she called the owner and he offered to let us camp there and then she directed us to a nearby restaurant (which was closed except for the people there) but they agreed to sell us a couple beers anyway.
And I am leaving out half the weird details!
While this may seem like a pretty strange day, it is not actually unusual. I mean, it is completely unique and bizarre, but it seems like nearly all of our days on the bike are slightly bizzarre, each in its own unique way. So not so unusual after all.
