Peru is (rightly) proud of its Pisco, a tasty beverage made from distilled grapes. You can drink it straight or enjoy it in its popular form as the Pisco Sour cocktail. I have lost track of how many Pisco Sours we have sampled, and canīt wait to mix up some of these for friends and family when we return.

The center of Pisco production is in Ica, one of the unlikely areas where irrigation transforms the desert into fertile ground for growing, among other things, grapes.

We visited two bodegas, the larger industrial Picasso farm where they also make wine, as well as the Alvarez artesinal bodega. It was fascinating to see first-hand how the process works, from the picking of the grapes to the crushing to the distilling to the tasting. (Itīs not every experience that leaves you educated AND intoxicated.)
