Before coming to Peru, we were unaware that most of the west coast is actually a vast desert. For thousands of years, civilizations have been confined to the river valleys where irrigation transforms the bleak landscape into dense agricultural areas.
Occasional oases also dot the landscape, providing water, shade, and -in the case of Huacachino - dune buggies. Yep, we have found the gringo trail...and they are all in dune buggies in Huacachino.
Not to be left out of the fun, we jumped on board and enjoyed a rip-roaring afternoon of screaming around the desert, sand boarding down HUGE dunes, and enjoying the sunset before heading back to our little oasis town for our nightly pitcher of Pisco Sours.
