This is the Florida keys update! Seems like it has been weeks since we 'blogged'.
We need to tell you about 'Rambo' who has joined the star-troupers team.
He is our car (a Chevy) and has been taking us to some great places.
Em: We started by heading from Miami to the Key Largo (having saved over double on the car hire by doing it online).
The Keys are really really small - as you drive down them you can mostly see ocean to the left and ocean to the right of the car.
It was great to make our way through the keys - we stayed at Marathon on our first night
M: It was great to get behind the wheel again! causing mayhem on the streets as i confronted traffic head on. We had some real laughs with our journeys in 'Rambo'. My luck rather than judgement saw us to end up where we wanted to be, and of course Emma being my eyes!
Em: The phrase 'alright your way?' now makes us laugh as Matt asks me, I say busy,
he says - no there's nothing coming and then realises he's heading for the oncoming traffic. I think he has it sussed now!!
Had a really great day in Key West - the highlight of the keys by far.
Laid back feel about the place, gorgeous houses and arty people.
Sunny day, had cocktail and saw the 'sights'.
In an attempt to save pennies we decided to sleep in rambo on lilos in a hotel car park.
All I can say is that is was awful - like trying to sleep in a hearse whilst being in a boiling hot green-house.
I had half an hour of sleep all night - only bonus was seeing the sun come up - thank god!
M: 'Alright your way'....... i find myself saying this at random times now, and then chuckling away. I always thought of the idea of sleeping in the car and when we collected the car it just seemed so easy.......big car, blacked out windows....what more could you want? Ok it was the worst nights sleep ever, i've never seen a girl sweat like that. Sleeping in a marriot carpark, all was going well....no one would know we were there! Several litres of emmas sweat later and the lilos thinking they were back in the sea, any sleep was looking very unlikely. Then to finish it off, along came another hotel guy on a buggy....bearing in mind it was 87f outside! the car was hot enough inside to be completely steamed on every window and thinking we had already been rumbled a couple of times, this was time to panic. This guy we heard approaching and then shouted Oi! and then seemed to be speaking 'Cuban' We dare not move to look out and i suddenly reached Emmas Temperature......it turned out to be a false alarm but that was enough, time to move on. I drove off with Emma still on the lylo and found a site just over the road ' a mattress man shop'
I left the air-con on for a while and then we tried to sleep again but in the front. I dont know if we got any real sleep but i felt great the next day for it bizzarly! We were, however, appreciative the next day for a 'best western' apartment the following night.......all good fun
Em: Just to clarify I had the torment of spending the night looking at a shop full of mattresses!! Was pleased with myself the following day though - bright and breezy on relatively no sleep. Haggled the 'best western' rate down - twice!, to make it acceptable to our budget
(Eve - just like the markets in Peru!) Absolute heaven - goregous shower and massive bed.
I was born for the finer things in life!!
And so to Orlando via Sarasota....... to follow at a travel blog site near you soon!
