Aunt Sue and Uncle Guido's House

Flag of Italy  , Veneto,
Saturday, June 20, 2009

Second absolutely gorgeous day walking around Venice. Aunt Sue took us on the vaporetto (water bus) all over the city. We stopped at every single osteria we could find. Osterias are these tiny little shops that serve wine and small finger foods (small sandwiches, caprese, fish, etc). We literally ate, drank and walked non-stop for 8 hours...a lot of wine for Liana, not enough for Chris :-) Luckily, Aunt Sue and Uncle Guido have liters and liters of wine at home. They take bottles to their local pump and fill up for a couple euros a liter--and its the BEST wine ever. So good! We have been eating like royalty here! Fresh fruit (figs, flat peaches, nespoli, cherries, melon, etc) from the market today...prosicutto and melon, caprese salad, black cuttlefish risotto...we're in heaven!!

Guido's fellow sandolista, Carlos took us on a wonderful tour of Venice. Sandolos are like gondolas, but slightly different--the ends aren't curled up and they are rare. In Venice there are 500+ gondolas but only 20 sandolas. Guido was a sandolista for 52 years (!!) and used to be the vice-president of the sandolista union so he and Sue are very well known in Venice. Everywhere we went people stopped to say hello and chat. Tomorrow we're in Venice for the day and leaving for Budapest on an overnight train.

Love,
Chris and Liana
