Sunday September 8........ Our last morning on our trip west. Another good night and breakfast at Holiday Inn Express North.  Love those cinnamon buns. They are the same in each of their hotels and oh so good.
We headed out to Route 20 and headed for South Bend Ind. about half an hour away. When we got there we found our way to Notre Dame University. We drove around the very quiet campus. It was Sunday morning. We parked the car and walked around the campus a bit. A very impressive place indeed.
Back out to 20 and westward ho!!! we were still a couple of hours from Chicago and we wanted to do some sightseeing so we drove straight through. We picked up an extra hour by crossing into the Central Time Zone.  As we arrived on Lakeshore Ave. I realized that the Chicago Bears game was going to kickoff soon. We breezed right past the stadium with no problem. Everyone everywhere seemed to be dressed in Bears jerseys. Several blocks later we arrived at Navy Pier. After parking in the garage ($25 flat fee, ugh) we head out to explore.                                                 This is a cool place, kinda like Quincy Market area in Boston. A beer garden, restaurants, shops, attractions and a huge ferris wheel. There were several tour boats waiting to take you out on Lake Michigan. After walking around the pier a bit we decided to take a cruise. It was a half hour trip and they were knocking 3 bucks off "today only". The lake was a bit choppy and the tour was pre recorded and not always in sync with where we were, but it pointed out several buildings and points of interest. She also explained the origin of the nickname "The Windy City". It has nothing to do with the weather, it was  used to describe the long winded politicians who were bidding to bring a major exhibition to Chicago in the 1890's...Hmmmm,I did not know. On our walk back we passed the food court. Some of the places there include The Billy Goat Tavern (cheezborger, cheezborger, no pepsi, coke), Harry Carey Tavern, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville to name a few.
We paid the ransom on the Camry and headed into the city. We were in search of Millenium Park. My GPS had switched modes while we were deep inside the parking garage and was not making any sense. So we had a bit of an adventure until I reset it and we found the place. There was street parking available but we still had to pay. This was a hoppin place, a very nice park, There were some gardens, a fountain and this very curious big shiny round thing called "Clouds Gate". It is a huge round mirrored sculpture that gives a unique reflective perspective wherever you stand There was a rap concert on the stage, Aloe Blacc was on. I realized then that the game must be over when endless streams of fans in Bears jerseys emerged from the subway stop.  We walked back to our car and headed for the next destination.
Karen wanted to see the corporate HQ for True Value. It is located near O'Hare airport. Between the game just ending and the airport traffic we were going nowhere fast. GPS said I was about 3 miles from the exit I needed and we were crawling. I saw the name of the street we were headed for at the exit ahead. It turns out the street runs parallel to the highway. We made the right choice and got off there. Traffic was pretty light here and at least we were moving. Then I realized the street name had changed. Bryn Mawr Dr. had crossed the highway and we were on the wrong side. We took a turn at the next light hoping to get to the other side but it was a parking lot. We were directly across from the True Value building. It was a good place to get some pics.
I found our way to the other side and we pulled right up to the building. It looks to be about a 25 story building. Now she knows where all those stupid, clueless decisions that she has to deal with come from. This was it.....the furthest west we would get.  The parking lot where we had been before was a Marriott hote and it a had Gino's East Pizza. Since I knew of their reputation for Chicago Deep Dish Pizza and it was dinner time, I headed back there. I love Chicago style pizza. The menu said it would take about 40 minutes. No problem!!! We ordered a large sausage and cheese. Then we looked for our room for the night. We decided to stay back in Elkhart where we had been the night before. Hotwire came up with the Holiday Inn Express......South. We had been in the north the night before. The pie came and it was HUGE and it was GOOOOOD. We managed 2 slices each. We packed up the rest to go. Elkhart was about 2 hours away by the Interstate. We headed out...East.
I had not even thought about gas and about 45 minutes from Elkhart Karen noticed the low fuel light. OOOPS!! A check of the onboard computer told me we had about 25 miles to find gas. After some anxious moments and a glitch with the EZ Pass and a few wrong turns we pulled into a gas station. Full of fuel we completed return trip to Elkhart. It turns out that this hotel was just as nice and friendly as the one across town. We were about 14 hours of Interstate driving from home. Time to crash for the night.
