If you are looking for a cheap trip, spend a little more and go to Varadaro. Cayo Coco, and the Krystal Laguna posts itself as a 3 and 1/2 * hotel.. better make that a two star.
PROS - Cuban people are always friendly. Water was warm. Pool side was ok.
Saving grace on the last day was to make a reservation at the Italian restaurant and have a lobster. Wine was great as it came from Spain or some other country.
CONS - Be warned that they will charge you 20 cents on the dollar to buy those crazy convertible pesos and you will not get a fair exchange rate when you try and change them back to your currency. For a country that is anti-USA, they make sure that you get dinged when you use your credit card.. first purchases are in US dollars.
The people at this resort expect a tip and if you don't tip, you get mediocre or no service.
The resort itself is very tired with major improvements needed. Toilets for the most part do not flush properly and one has to fill a bucket to flush. The plumbing is in dire need of repairs as do roofs, and airconditioning systems.
Poolside and beach chairs are broken and very dirty and not from sand by from the sun tan oil which sokes each chair.
The resort is named for the lagoon that separates the resort from the ocean. The lagoon is neither crystal nor appealing. It is a stagnant pool which harbors a lot of biting insects. Flotsam and debris which floats on the surface every day.
We had the same food day after day; same deserts, same fish, same, same, etc. Fruits ditto as well. Although the drinks were free they appeared to be watered down and the mixes were left to be desired.
The beaches had their problems as well. There appears to be a lot of sand fleas as witnessed by the numerous bits on people legs and arms. Not just a few but a lot. Right now I sport no less than twenty on my arms and legs.
No mattter what the cost, we do not recommend this resort. Oh yes remember to keep 25 convertible pesos for each person to get out of CUBA as they have really become a very capitalistic country that looks to fleece the tourist at every corner.
