What I did
The car was dropped off in Piran at noon. We said our goodbyes to MM and MMGF who had been so amazing to us and started to drive. It was a good choice to leave Piran because the rains were coming and we ran into them. Steve did an amazing job with the car on the wet roads.
In the Lonely Planet guide it claimed that there was a presentation at the Stud Farm for the Lipicaner Horses, so we decided to give it a try. The Lipizzaner stallions are a bred started by the Hapsburg family of Austria-Hungary. They wanted a strong and intelligent bred, so they created it. The original stud farm is here, in Lipica, Slovenia. The famous Spanish Riding School is located in Vienna, Austria and takes its' best and brightest stallions on tour.
We watched a few jumps, then joined a tour, before catching a small presentation. It was gorgeous to watch. These massive horses who are intelligent enough to kick their front and their back legs into the air on command. Every single one was a gentle gray colour with the exception of the one black stallion.
It was rainy for the first time on our trip, but that didn't stop us. Steve did a nice job driving for the first time in rain in two years. Next we made our way to the Slovenia Tuscany. We were told by MMGF some of the best wines of the region so we were hoping to stop at the few wineries, but it was too rainy so we only stopped at one. It ended up being one - Stoka - which is one of the best in the area for teran wine. A beautiful red wine. We bought three bottles.
The night was spent in a little town outside Tolmin called Čiginj. We were driving by and it just called to us. We wanted quiet and we had yet to realize how small 'big city' Slovenija was in actuality. It was perfect for us. Little pizza place across the street and the view from the windows above our heads was remarkable. We fell to sleep looking at the stars and woke up to a gentle mist wafting over the mountains. Yes, a car was a good idea.
