We wake up this morning to a heavy rainstorm. This is the FIRST day on our trip it has rained with the exception of the short rain shower we encountered in Arizona at Lake Powell. We pack up, check out of our hotel and head out for lunch. I am a little disappointed because I didn't get to have one last walk on the beach, but so happy that we were able to be here at the Outer Banks for even a short time.
We first head to a little shop I remember from last year. I wanted an ocean painting there and didn't get it then. I was hoping it would still be there! Of course the exact one I want isn't here, but the shop has some other nice things and I buy something anyway.
Because it has been raining hard we have to dodge the huge areas of sitting water along the Outer Bank's highways. We make our way back to the Manteo waterfront to eat at a restaurant that will be featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives this fall. Ortega'z. The place is small and has no parking, but luckily the rain has stopped so we park up the street and walk to the restaurant. The place is great! There is a wonderful atmosphere and we order sweet potato fries and specialty burgers. The waiters and waitresses are all talking about the filming of the show. Guy Fieri was just there last week and they all thought it was very exciting. I can't wait to see the show! We really enjoy our meal!
After eating we head out and plug Raleigh into the GPS, first traveling on the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge across the Croaton Sound, then we cross over the Alligator River and the Albemarle Sound. It is still raining some. As we near Raleigh we run into TWO separate hard rainstorms, so hard we have to get off the interstate both times. And both times after the rain slows down and we start driving again, we see cars that have spun out of control and wrecked on the side of the road.
We make it to Raleigh by late afternoon and plan to go to dinner with our daughter Anna. We are excited to be here to see her AND get our little dog Max. We arrive at her apartment and she is out walking Max. He sees me but he doesn't seem to recognize me.
We will stay here two nights before we head back home on Friday. It is a great way to end our trip, spending time with Anna. I tell Art I am not ready to go home and tackle housework, cooking, and bills again. He feels the same way. We even contemplate staying in Raleigh an extra night. Can we just STAY ON VACATION???
We are now looking ahead and planning another trip.... So, where can we go next??
