Day 14 - Las Vegas - Temps in the 90's

We wake up this morning planning to pack up and move on and Art says, "Let's stay another night here". It takes me 2 seconds to say OK. We are both tired and we didn't get to see much of Las Vegas the night before, so we stay.

I spend the morning working on my blogs and resting. Around 1:00 we leave to go explore Las Vegas and find a great lunch buffet.  We are winging this because we know NOTHING about how to explore Las Vegas. Art picks out a place from the Internet and we set out to get there.

The one thing that defines Las Vegas to me is HUGE, BILLION DOLLAR, HOTEL CITIES.  Each of the hotels are high rise and many of the hotels are as large as our mall. Not only do they house thousands of people in their hotel rooms, but they have casinos, restaurants, shows and shops all in one building. To find a place to park and get inside of one takes strategy. We have learned that you go behind the hotels on the strip and park in huge parking garages for free and then walk (sometimes forever) to get to the hotel. We first try Cesar's Palace. But after walking in circles and getting nowhere except the loading docs, we go back and get our car and try again.

Next we use our GPS to find Imperial Palace and find the parking garage for it. We succeed this tine and we are able to get into the hotel and casino fairly easily. We follow signs to get to the buffet. We eat lunch, and talk to some ladies that tell us that we should buy the $50.00 meal buffet and that lets you eat all you can eat at 7 of the casinos associated with Harrah's casino for 24 hours. That would have been a better deal for us, but live and learn.

Next we go into the casino and just watch all the action. There are some entertainers singing and dancing right on a podium in the middle of the casino. We watch them for a while and watch the people that are playing at the tables. We then head back to the hotel for a little while so we can come back when it is dark.

Later we drive back to the strip to catch the light shows. There is a volcano fire show in front of one hotel and a water show in front of another we want to see. We are smart now.... we know where to park, so we go back to where we parked before.

THIS time we walk through the casino and out the front to the strip. It is wild there. People are walking elbow to elbow up and down the strip. Music is playing from every direction. The traffic is bumper to bumper. We walk for a while and look at all the lights and videos that play on the hotel roofs and walls. It feels pretty safe here. Lots of couples and people seem intelligent... that is until after midnight.

We get to see some of the two shows. We are exhausted and try to catch the monorail back to our car, but it has shut down for the night (we discover that after walking forever to get TO it).  We end up walking a lot to get back and it is well after midnight. We stop in one of the hotels to eat pizza. The crowd outside is not looking as nice as before.

We finally make it back to the car and get back to our hotel in one piece.  I NOW know what Las Vegas is all about... at least what it looks like. We have had enough of Las Vegas and we are ready to head toward the Grand Canyon.
