I got up early and took the tram (Bybanen) to the bus station in Bilbao. Apparaently bus is the easiest way to move around in the Basque as trains are unreliable and not very fast.. At 10 am (an hour after leavin Bilbao) I arrived in beautiful San Sebastián - or Donostia in basque.

I took a taxi to my hotel (Hotel San Sebastian) and was told I could not check in before noon. They kept my luggage and I headed down to the beach. I changed into my bikini and went for a swim in the Bisqaya Bay :-) Since I didn't have a towel I stood upright drying afterwards ;-) Did some stretching as well so I looked real sporty :p

On my way back to the hotel I had two pintxos in a bar for lunch! I checked in and it was nice to stay in a hotelroom with aircondition, space and real windows! I left my valuable belongings, grabbed a towel and headed back to the beach. One bad thing about travelling solo is that you have noone to rub sunscreen on your back..especially the upper part of my back was really red after falling asleep :p Well well - I got to swim, nap, and look at all the people - all while sunbathing in this beautiful city :-D

I had lunch at La Perla restaurant which has been recommended by the Michelin guide but only the a la carte-menu probably - but hey! it's the same kitchen that cooks the hamburgers, innit?? After lunch I did some research to get to know where the shopping-area was. I found a lot of boutiques with a lot of sale and a lot of shoes! Heaven! I didn't have any money though as I'd left them in my hotelroom (sensible and silly). I went back (quite a long walk actually..) and freshened up ;-) This time I took a bus to the cathedral - right in the middle of all the shops :-) I couldn't find any of the shops I had seen earlier though... Argh!! Well, as you figure there are quite a lot of shops in SS!

I had some pintxos instead :-) Eating is very important when your in a gastronomical city as SS! I asked what the bartender recommended as there are so many to choose between: I got a piece of bread with iberian ham, baby-octopus (??? looked like one!) and prawn. All marinated in garlic. I also chose one pintxo all by myself: bolla de carne - a round croquette with meat and mashed potato?.. I must admit I don't always know what I eat or order... :p

I went to the old part of the city and strolled around, had a drink in a bar, strolled some more. The streets are packed with tourists, who all seem to be either Spanish or French. It was a very good atmosphere :-) I saw the amazing sunset.. Very romantic ;-)

I highly recommend San Sebastián as I think it got everything you need: a nice beach, good shopping, bars with nice pintxos and such a good atmosphere when everyone'a standing outside in the street eating and drinking and chatting away! I suppose there are mueums and other sites to visit as well, but I didn't get to see any but a cathedral from the outside.

¡Buena noche!
