Where I stayed
Pacific Inn and then Pioneer Hostel
Dear all,
You won't believe this but as I was getting ready to type this - a deer just walked across the garden of the place I am staying and strolled across the road - I was too slow to get a good photo so you will just have to take my word for it.
Anyway - glad you are enjoying my updates - it is fun for me doing them and it feels like almost having a conversation.
The ferry journey to Prince Rupert from Port Hardy was absolutely amazing - the weather was perfect and the sea was very calm. The ferry itself was brand new and had only been in operation since the middle of May. It was a beauty plenty of comfy seats/viewing areas and not many people - some times I was the only one on deck. The food was good too - maybe CalMac should send a rep over here to see how its done. Saw a couple of whales and some seals.
Changed plans about Alaska - ferries too unreliable and very slow so I wouldn't have time to do justice - maybe next time? Also driving one way anywhere involves huge drop charge so won't be driving to Calgary.Did round trip to Smithers - about 360km from Prince Rupert and stayed over a couple of nights. Fabulous scenery - again, but I have a complaint now about the weather it was too hot - over 30 degrees. Result - snow melting at phenomenal rate and the mighty Skeena river at risk of flooding - hope not as my train tomorrow runs very close to it at points. Train is called the Skeena train and goes to Jasper in the Rockies - takes 2 days which is what I mean about distance being an object - you can't get anywhere fast unless you fly everywhere - no fun in that.
For my second stay in PR I have booked into a hostel - yes a hostel - but it is fantastic and much better than the hotel the Vancouver tourist office booked me into. I would recommend anyone to stay here. It is in Cow Bay - now no tittering at the back - it is quite a trendy part of town - no need to venture further.
That's all from me as I must go out and be sociable round the old campfire - on second thoughts fog is rolling in so maybe not.
