(Since I got a message from Travelpod that they were able to 'Reclaim' this entry, and since I'm still getting congratulations on 'the' fish, and said they never read about the true fish story, I'm resending the link to it... sort of funny story)

Well, I may have exaggerated a little bit about the fish I caught… The truth is closer to me either being one of the worst fishermen or one of the dumbest fishermen.  But the truth is also that I love it.

I mentioned that the place that I rented a cottage for the weekend is somewhat common in this region and is known as a fishing park… its name is Kieng Doi Fishing Park and it is so tranquil and so peaceful and, well truth be told, my fishing did nothing to change that.

There are about 8 different lakes here…a very large one and the others seem to be half to that size.  Well I woke up early this morning, packed my fly rod and backpack and scouted out the various lakes.  The water was very active with fish breaking the surface. I needed a lake that had open access so I could more easily cast without getting caught up in brush and trees.  The 4th lake away had a lot of nice openings  and there were spots where it looked like the water was just percolating with activity.

So, I fished dry surface flies…but nothing.  But the fish were so active it seemed impossible that I wasn't catching anything…I tried every type of fly I had and then tried wet flies that went deeper.  But I wasn’t catching a thing and hr. turned into an hour…nada.  Then a truck with a local worker at this fishing park showed up tho any help he could offer was of no value as he spoke only Thai.  He just watched as I caught nothing.  A 2nd truck with about 6 workers then pulled up and they got out and all walked to the far end of the lake and 4 or 5 went into the water.  The remaining workers got a humongous dredging net that ran the full width of the lake… this was not going to be good for my fishing!

It was then I realized for the 1st time that I was fishing in the lake that they used as a stocking lake to supply the main lake…. No wonder the lake was percolating…it was there, as were the other 6 smaller lakes, only to breed fish.  And I still couldn’t catch anything!

Well, after about hr. more,  the net  reached my end of the lake and there were zillions of these monstrous sized fish.  I wasn’t going to be denied so I picked out one of the larger catfish, pointed to a worker with my camera and had him take the picture I sent earlier.  I then tossed him into the back of the truck with a couple of hundred of other fish and watched sadly as the truck drove away with my fish.

So unfortunately a twang of guilt about my post got to me... I knew the truth needed to be told…  Let others BS about 'the one that got away'...I can always brag about 'the one that drove away'!

Well, this place is amazing tho.  As I said, unbelievably serene and tranquil, the cottage has been wonderful.... with hot showers and flush toilets…and the owners and their family have been so warm.  I had trouble with the WiFi in my room and they had their daughter speak with the internet provider as she spoke English well and Thai fluently.  The fellow from the internet company even came from about 5 km away to get it to work for me.  The people of this region are just really amazingly warm.

After he fixed it, I sat down in the outside restaurant for an excellent meal and Bee, the helpful daughter of the owners, came over & sat down and we chatted for a long while.  What a sweet girl... she told me she was studying law in Bangkok when her father got ill, so she left the university to come back home to help her mom out running the fishing park.  In this culture, with such high value placed on family, I’m sure she didn’t give it a 2nd thought…it is just how they are brought up.  Anyway, we are now friends on Facebook and hopefully we’ll be able to keep in touch.

It gets betterer and betterer…and homestay starts Tuesday...  all the volunteers who went last week said was their highlight.  Next weekend is my last and I’m trying to hook up with a guide to go river/stream fishing in this supposedly gorgeous mountain location called Pai.

That’s it for now…I’m signing off.
