So almost a year after Dom and i addopted our little sparrow in feb of 07, we gathered our things, loaded the rest of the family on board and headed across the gulf between venezuela and trini to the Monamo river. some 58nm to the SW. it was our end of year beak from a solid year of working repairs, and we disappeared off the "face" of the earth for the whole of December.
We cuised some 20 miles upstream the river that lies a couple miles wide enjoying the chalenge of trading cloth, sewing things, forks and spoons, gosip mags, tshirts, and a sweet for every kid we came across. watching the evening skies turn rosy red as hundreds of thousands of scarlet ibis passed overhead to their night time perch in the trees on Ibis Island. Counting blue and gold Mcaws as they wove in and out of the the jugle. guessing the beast that made the eiry sounds at night fall.
we shared our xmas with our good friends Ruth and Niels on Baraka, eating turkey and ham... and decorating a palm fond for our xmas tree.
then we branched off the main river to a tributary that cut through the dense jungle...some times only wide enough to get the boat thru, to another river of the orinoco delta - the perdenales.... which we followed back down to the mouth of the monamo and back to our home-away-from home in trinidad....

the pictures say the most!!!!!

Hello Dom and Alex

What beautiful pics., well done, digital cameras really make it easy, hey? Your trip up that river looks wonderful - wish we had done it when we were in Venezuela!!! Always remember to go everywhere - we missed so many interesting places and regret it now. Time usually gets in the way - Love Paddy
Well Heck! You can't do 'em all. Mike here.
Just wondered, since you acquired your boat in Trini', whether she could have been named after 'The Mighty Sparrow' - he was the greatest calypso singer in the Carribean in the '60s and '70s, some of his great numbers still played occasionally to this day -'We don't want any Bachinale at this Carnival' etc, and if you want to hear a real classic - 'MELDA!'
Good Going Guys, Mike
