13th April 2012

Sunny 25 degrees

We started today's activities with the Snake Lagoon hike.   The trail wound through sugar gums and mallee and then along Rocky River (lots of rocks, not so much river).  It ends at a pretty little beach at Maupertuis Bay which cautions against freak waves.  We decided against the Sandy Beach hike and headed back to Postman’s Cottage for lunch.   After a break we headed down to Hanson Bay where there’s a nice quiet beach.  Then on to Kelly Hill Caves where we went on the 45 minute Show Cave tour.  There were four main chambers with lots of decorative stalactites, stalagmites and helictites (these form sideways).  Our tour guide, Jane, was very knowledgeable on the formations and of the history of the discovery of the caves.  At one point demonstrating how they looked by candlelight and then in pitch darkness... quite amazing that they were first explored by candlelight.  After the caves we headed back to Admirals Arch and the seal colony before having another look at Remarkable Rocks as the sun was setting.
