26th May
Venice to Rovinj (Croatia)
Sunny 33 degrees (Usually around 21 degrees at this time of year)

Today we drove to beautiful Croatia. It's very green and lush and the soil beneath the grape vines is a dark rich red. We found our apartment in Rovinj without too much trouble but with no one there when we arrived we drove into town to get our bearings and returned a little later to settle in. Later in afternoon when it was a little cooler we walked down to the Old Town. Rovinj is an ancient town on the North Adriatic Sea and an active fishing port. It has an interesting history including rule by Romans, Byzantine, Franks, Venice, Austria, Italy and finally Croatia. We walked up to the church and bell tower which are situated at the highest point of the town and decided to climb the tower. The views were magnificent and definitely worth the 200 or so steep, narrow rungs to get there, although we weren't so sure on the way back down. We wandered about the quaint marble paved lanes for a while before deciding on a restaurant by the water to have dinner, and then watched the sunset before walking back to the apartment.
