April 27th, 2006 - Uyuni 6:20pm

Thursday, April 27th

The following morning, Julieta left at 7:30am to go to Cuzco by bus, while I took a half-day trip to a town called Chacataya, Bolivia´s main place to go skiing. I had organized the trip through a tourism agency just outside of my hostel and they had arranged for a van to pick me up at 8am.

So around 8:10am, the guide named Freddie, picked me up from the hostel and we made our way to pick up the rest of the tourists for this trip ( I was the first one to be picked up). We stopped by the next hostel and a young couple got in the van. I quickly realized that they were also Brazilians from Florianopolis and we quickly started chatting. A few minutes later, we picked up the next couple that coincidentally also happened to be from Brazil, this time from Sao Paulo. A few minutes later, we made our next stop and this time the passenger was an elderly man wearing a funny hat. As he got close I realized that his hat said Brazil on it and I said to myself: ¨That is just what we needed, yet another Brazilian!!¨. As he got in, I politely greeted him and asked him: ¨Brasileiro?¨, and he replied in Spanish: ´´No, I am Cuban but I have just visited Brazil.¨ And he sat next to me. This man's name was Rahul and he was a 74 year old Cuban travelling on his own and we had a very interesting conversation during this trip that was for me, the highlight of that day. Our last two passengers that we picked up were two Swiss girls that I will talk about later as our paths ended up crossing later in the trip as well.

To be continued.... (I have to run to catch my bus to Potossi...)
