Where I stayed
Alessandro's Place

Flag of Italy  , Piedmont,
Wednesday, May 19, 2010

In the morning, I was playing with Kurt on the balcony of Alessandro's place, and I hear
the voice of a woman above me on her balcony. "Ca bella."

I smiled and said, "Gratzie!"

By 11:30, I left for the church. There were so many people. It is so humbling to realize how this relic is a part of so many lives. I was quieted by the nuns who handed me small cards of the shroud face. The weather was beautiful. They have the shroud behind air-tight, UV-resistant glass now, and have also removed the cloth that was added in the 15th century which was an attempt to repair the burned areas on the shroud.  There was something so surreal about the whole experience. They spoke a prayer in Italian and Latin with each new group who came up to see the shroud. About thirty people, divided between three rows like theatre seats or something, were brought up before the relic at a time. We had about ten minutes to really look at it before the next group was ushered in. I feel very thankful to have been a part of this.
