anyway, on our last night in Auckland I went out with Danny for dinner to a restaurant on the waterfront and then we met up with Rach and everyone else back at the hostel bar to drink away our bar tab from the previous night. we said all of our goodbyes to the people who worked at the hostel and some of the locals who also drank in the bar. We both also beat one of the guys who works reception at pool after he bragged that he could beat both of us. woohoo! Pool sharks anyone?
anyway, we left to catch our flight the next afternoon and ended up in Honolulu airport about 5 hours before we even left our hostel in Auckland. crazy. Stupid International date line..... We had to book into a hotel as according to STA the hostel in Waikiki had shut down
. STA are dirty liars. anyway, it was nice to live in a hotel for 5 days where we both had our own double beds and we didn't have to wear flip flops in the shower. always a bonus. however, we quickly realised that as we were in a hotel and are underage to drink, we basically had nowhere to meet people and so spent about 5 pretty lonely days in waikiki, sunbathing on the beach and wandering around the city. we even resorted to going on a bar crawl despite being underage. we ended up bearing big black stamps on our hands saying 'UNDER-21' while discussing theology with a drunk guy from the Bible Belt of America. hilarious. Not so hilarious that they didnt trust us enough to actually smell and taste our drinks to check there was no vodka lurking in our pints of diet coke!it will be nice to get home and feel like valid members of society again where we are seen as old enough to make our own decisions. we ended up moving into a hostel in waikiki where we are gradually meeting some more people but its very different here because a lot of people are on vacation for a week or two rather than travelling. however, our fellow hostel-dwellers have taken pity on us and we now have more alcohol in our fridge than we know what to do with. we managed to miss Spam Jam the other evening as we were getting to know people in our hostel so byt the time we all got out to the main street, all the festivities were over :(. Now Spam Jam, what is that i hear you all cry (or not). well it is an evening of fun devoted to Hawaii's favourite canned meat, Spam (Stuff Posing As Meat)
. Fun. And i was really looking forward to being an advocate of kosher meat that evening! Anyway we ended up on the beach which was absolutely beautiful at night. this morning i got up and went for a surf with 3 canadian guys from our hostel which was a lot fo fun. i didnt embarrass myself too badly as none of them had ever surfed before so my 3 days, about 4 months ago showed their true colours as I managed to catch some waves and ride them in, much to the amazment of the guys. score. That's pretty much all we've been doing sicne we arrived but we think that we deserve a couple of weeks relaxing and detoxing after rushing round new zealand and australia. the plan is to go an explore one of the other islands, possible the Big Island towards the end of the week.
hope everyone's revision is going well!
Aloha from sunny Waikiki beach! Just to let you all know, Im sitting in a backpackers hostel one block away from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. I just wanted you to know. sorry.
