The ryokan that we stayed at in Kanazawa was unexpextedly so enjoyable that it enjoys its own post.

As usual, we began our search for a hostel / ryokan on hostelworld, where we found that the top-ranked (in terms of reviews) places had all been booked out. Faced with the choice of expensive options with good reviews or a very cheap place that for some reason had not reveived such good reviews, we opted for the latter (at 2800 yen per person per night for a double room, this was the cheapest place we have stayed at so far in Japan).

Upon arrival at the hostel, we found that the staff were immediately very friendly (and had a liking for koalas) and that our tatami mat room was very spacious and well-fitted (including a fridge and phone). There was also unlimited free green tea.

Each evening, we were able to enjoy the very hot japanese-style bath in the basement, which we could book for private use.

Even using the internet turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable, when our very friendly host gave us delicious Japanese plum wine (and later rice crackers, custard and seemingly home-made mochi!).

We definitely recommend this place!!!
