From Shirakawa-go, we caught the bus to Takayama, another mountainous village. This one is a little with bigger, with about 100,000 people. We stayed at another Buddhist temple, called Zenkoji - this one is more like a hostel with a temple attached than a temple that happens to allow people to stay over. Despite being a little cold (the temple is huge so it is hard [expensive?] to keep the whole thing heated all the time), the rooms are large and they're all located around a lovely garden.

Takayama has a lovely old district, filled with sake breweries. Unfortunately the brewery tours don't begin until the 18th of Jan (missed them again, argh!), but we did some sake tasting of the locally brewed stuff, and bought a bottle of shiro sake, which still has rice in it! Unfortunately it needs to be kept cold so can't be brought back to Aus, but it's sweet and I really like it!

We also did a couple of walks, and fed so pretty little orange wrens (called Varied Tits), which would land on our hands for a few seconds to pick up the food and then flutter away. Our camera isn't good enough to take a good photo, but we tried! We also went hiking around the mountains to try and find some castle ruins, but they must've been buried in the snow because we couldn't find any despite our best efforts!

Takayama is also home to a place called 'Hida Folk Village' which is were they have moved and preserved the Gasshos that used to exist in Takayama and nearby (same houses as those seen in Shirakawa-go).

Our first two days in Takayama were quite nice - there was some residual snow on the ground - but they days were pleasant and sunny. However, the last three days we've seen constant snow snow snow snow snow! Lovely to look at from the inside, sitting next to a heater, but kind of annoying if you actually want to do stuff. Still can't complain too much! I hear it's hot back home....

As usual, see photos below.

Beautiful photos. Not a bad shot of the tit considering you haven't a fancy camera!
