After Kyoto, we headed to Nara, which was the first permanent capital of Japan. Today, it's a compact little city with the biggest wooden temple in Japan, called Todai-ji. Nara also seems to be the home of deer in Japan, as I soon discovered.

We had some trouble with the train to Nara, accidentally getting on a limited express train, when we had only purchased a ticket for a local train. But not to worry, the Japanese train inspector was able to rectify the problem immediately using his mobile ticket issuer. I wish Australia was that efficient - we surely would have been whacked with a $200 fine if in Sydney!

After arriving in Nara and checking into our guest-house, we went for a walk, and immediately encountered deer. They were cute and friendly, and we made the mistake of buying some food to feed them with. As soon as they noticed we had food, they raced towards us, headbutting, chewing on our bags and clothing etc. Ravenous beasts! They seem pretty crazy about their deer in Nara... they sell all sorts of deer memorabilia, the funniest was deer poop candy! Should have taken a photo of it!

The next day, we went temple-seeing, including the very impressive Todai-ji. This temple includes a giant bronze buddha, and a hole which you can crawl through for guaranteed enlightenment! Since we're both slim, we both have guaranteed enlightenment! No such luck for any rotund westerners though :) I think we now truely have 'Temple fatigue'.

We also sampled the local speciality, ordering a Udon Okonomiyaki (which the Japanese like to call a 'Japanese Pizza' but which is more like an omelet), and Teppanyaki - grilled dishes - very nice indeed!

Yeah, the deer are nuts. They ate my aunt's map and they bit William's jumper :( But how cute are their eyes!

I think temples in Japan are like churches and cathedrals in Italy. They are the heart of the culture!!
