Arashiyama is nestled in the mountains bordering the west of Kyoto. The main attraction there is Tenryu-ji, a temple which features a bamboo forest! It is very House of Flying Daggers.

From there, we did a short hike up a mountain to a 'monkey cage' - however, it's not the monkeys which are in a cage - it's the humans! Given my past history with monkeys, I was a little nervous about the trip... and when we saw our first monkey (hiking up the mountain, Ash turned around and said "there's a monkey behind you!") I froze in fear of being attacked. There was a large male following us up the path. However, we were pretty close to the `safety' of the cage.

In the cage, you could buy bags of food for 100 Yen each, which you could pass through the wire cage to the monkeys. There was one particularly cute baby monkey which was shaking with fear or cold, holding onto the wire cage for dear life while its mother was begging for food. Unfortunately we couldn't get any good photos of the little thing because we couldn't use flash! You could also go outside the cage and interact with the monkeys directly.

Anyway, I didn't get bitten again, but I still think monkeys are vicious (you should have seen them attack each other over food!).

Merry Christmas to you all!
