So we all rolled into Roddy's car after breakfast and cruised down the autobahn at 200+ kph towards Austria. It took us about three hours to reach the ski resort of Ischgl in the Tirol region.

Apparently there are ski resorts that are closer to Munich but Ischgl was something else. While I don't think that it was larger than Vail, it felt more majestic with its sweeping views of tree-less snowscapes. With three gondolas and many high speed 6 and 8 chairs there were nominal lines, and while it was a bit warm (and thus the snow alternately crunchy and soft), I could not complain about clear skies. And you could even ski into Switzerland to have lunch and buy watches :)

This being the first time snowboarding in Europe a few things struck me: the mountain lodges are better and more social; the apres ski scene is huge; there are dozens of nice and reasonably priced lodgings mountainside with inclusive meals and comprehensive spa facilities; and Europeans do not like going off-piste. And having spent the last two weeks in Ol' Blighty i have to say that Bavarian cuisine was a godsend. Overall, an incredible experience that even the late-season, inconsistent snow conditions could not take away from.

So after three days of skiing and eating and drinking and spa'ing, we rolled back into the car for a quicker drive back into Munich.
