After a short layover in Arlanda, I flew a little puddlejumper tubroprop to the island of Gotland where my friends Eric and Navin where waiting for me.

The capital of Gotland is a town called Visby. Originally a Viking settlement, it later became a member of the Hanseatic League and to this day retains much of its historic feel; So much so that UNESCO has deemed the entire walled town a World Heritage site.

Visby is also known as one of the happening places for Swedes to travel to during the summer months. And while it is popular all summer-long, week 29 in particular is known as the time when the jet-set, "the brats", of Stockholm descend upon the town. Apparently the brats have a very specific social calendar that they follow during the summer--the prior week at a certain tennis tournament and the following week involving a mass migration to St. Tropez. It was just my luck (or perhaps it was intense research and planning on my friends part) to land right in the heart of scene to witness some of the most frenzied partying that I have ever seen.

Admittedly I did not get to do much in the way of sightseeing during my weekend on the island but we did have a chance to visit Tofta beach in the south of the island as well as tour around the old walled city. Needless to say, by the end of the weekend, I was relieved to re-board the vomit-comet so I could continue by travels in a more balanced manner.
