2 hour drive from Corinth to Nafplio, it is very pretty once you start heading into the mountainous countryside.  Nafplio is set in a cove and once was the capital city of Greece of which the locals are quick to tell you.  It is a lovely town set in amongst mountains and an harbour. There are lots of restaurants and lots of jewellery stores which have handcrafted items made by the owners.  I nearly scored a beautiful platinum silver hand made bizantine ring copied on the original of Alexander's knot.  They weren't too pricey either considering the jewellery is hand made.
There is a fortress on top of the mountain overlooking the harbour and town. The view from the fortress at the top of the hill overlooking the town and down into the clear blue waters of the sea is breathtaking. Up in the fortress, I saw the first old dungeon - like the one in Shrek, and The Man in the Iron Mask it had water at the bottom of it and I could imagine rats living down there whilst the priosoners' were chained to the walls in the dark!  There is also an small looking fortress in the harbour - that's what it looks like though iniatially it was used as a qurantine center and has been used for many things including a jail, an executioners residence as they couldn't have them living in the city - could bring bad omen.
We did notice that there were people near where we stayed covering themselves in mud from the bottom of the sea bed where some seaweed grew -  like a total body mud wrap.  They would leave it on for about 2 hours than wash it off.  It gives them good skin and is recommended that you do it at least once every summer!
Mycenae is 20 minutes from Nafplio.  There is a museum here as well as the ruins.  The Lion's gate is of particular signifcance as well as the burial chambers.
