What can I say? Cappodocia is a wonderful place full of history and lots of places for the inquisitive to find what is in "the hole" of different rock formations!  The history goes back to 4 - 7th Century and there are little churches carved into the rocks as the Christians had to be secretive and hid from the Muslims.
There are different ways of seeing the different landscapes - most of them are on foot with or without tour guides.  You could always hot air balloon and on any given morning there are about 30 - 40 hot air balloons in the sky!  The operators of the hot air balloons must make a killing as it costs about 250 Euro for a 1-2 hour ride!!!
We stayed at the Anatolia Cave Pension where the managers are multilingual and are very helpful. They will organise tours, bus shuttles, advise where to walk etc.  They even bought Paul a most yummy chestnut birthday cake (very sweet)and  and he blew out candles and enjoyed a chat with them over a cup of tea!
We walked the Red Valley, the Rose Valley and on the last day walked the Love Valley ( seemed a lot of phallic looking rock formations - why the name?).  All require a moderate degree of fitness, and definitely require good footwear as the rock formations in some places are really slippery.  There are a number of older tourists whom walk with their spiked walking sticks which would be helpful.  Thought I was going to slide down the hill sometimes - though of course Daniel and Paul were there to catch me - most times!
We did take a guided tour to some other valleys and churches (green tour) which cost 70 tl per person, however to do it yourself would involve hiring a car etc. The tour covered about 200 kms and included admission to all museums/caves, lunch and of course transport and a tour guide!
The days we explored the valleys were quite strenuous with about 5 hours of walking up and down uneven ground and valleys. Even Daniel and Karlie were tired after our adventurous trips! Quite warm in sun so we are lucky the temperatures are not scalding otherwise we would not have been able to walk as far as we did.
We had a great time whilst here and were able to visit and explore locally as much as we liked.
Now off to Rome - Italy.
