Well, I guess history does repeat itself, sometimes... (For those of you who would not know what history I am referring to, please read my travelogue "Nepal 2006".)
So here it is, December 3rd has finally arrived. Plane ticket and travel insurance purchased online on www.expedia.ca and www.bcaa.ca respectively, and my luggage packed and ready, I must wake up early to hit the road and reach the Vancouver Airport where I am supposed to board a plane to complete the first segment of this trip to Seattle. Beginning the day before and continuing all through the night, snow has now been falling for several hours and ground accumulation has reached almost one meter.
Since my plane leaves Vancouver at 15h00, which means I should be at the airport about three hours before departure time to complete the customs and security checks, my friend Janos and I wake up early and head for Whistler. To put me in travelling mood, gaining momentum with the 4x4 is not enough to make it out of the driveway and quite a bit of shovelling is in order. One hour and a half later after crawling our way up the snow covered mountain road, we reach Whistler where we must have breakfast and hop in with another friend for the rest of the drive down to Vancouver.
After another 45 minutes of shovelling to clear another driveway, we are back on the road and now the snow has changed to freezing rain. Two and a half hours later, we reach Vancouver and the airport shortly after. We got very lucky since some sections of the road were already starting to flood. The weather later turns out into complete chaos for the whole Canadian and American west coast resulting in major floods and snow falls and causing havoc in ground and air transportation.
