Up before dawn, Denie and I go down and find our driver for the day. Into the jeep we get and off we go! We get to the entrance and are assigned route 2. I have great doubts about seeing any tigers on this trail. Just after entering the park, our guide tells us we are going to go where he saw a big male tiger the day before. Sure enough, there is a jeep ahead of us waving us down. Just by the road, there he is, a large male tiger eating his breakfast. It appears to be a Sambar, but whether he killed it is a mystery, as he is favoring his left front leg and seems to be injured. The crowds grow as everyone tries to get close. He finally moves out of the brush and little bit to a nearby stream and starts drinking. He remains there while all around is his audience watching breathlessly, jostling for a better look. We watch him for almost an hour and he finally limps off, up the hill, probably to take a nap. Denie and I are totally thrilled and relieved that we finally saw a tiger and won't leave here without a sighting.
We go back to the hotel and have our breakfast and take a nap before lunch. The mornings are cool, but by noon the heat is oppressive.
After lunch, the afternoon drive got started, also with notation of the "national bird of India". Shortly after we started, we go by a small lake and, low and behold, there she is! A young female, about 4 yrs. old. She is banded so they know a little about her. She is P17, the daughter of another older female in the park known as the Lady of the Lake (tiger P16). She has decided it is just too hot to do anything but take a long lay in the lake while her adoring public watches. We are sitting in the blazing sun and she is totally cool. We watch her for about 2 hrs and then go to see other animals and come back later to see if she is getting ready to hunt. We come back, just before we have to get out of the park before getting a fine and she has managed to pull herself out of the water and onto the bank. Taking a nap seems to be this lazy girls' priority, so we reluctantly leave her to it and rush out of the park.
We feel our luck is changing and are amazed we got to see two tigers.
