Morocco is heavy.

The atosphere, smells (open-air cooking, contamination, perfumes, garbage, spices, donkey dunge, deisel fumes, rich incense) the language, the look on men's faces, the history, the ensuing sense that you must constantly watch your back - the proposition, all heavy. Having come from a very tame and hospitable Europe, the widely spoken and reported reputation for this North African (and western most Muslim) country was one of warning: don't travel without guides into the medinas, don't vere from the established and known routes, don't let your wife be alone and show too much skin in public, don't trade her for camels regardles of how many they offer you. And at the same time, equally expressed to us were the aspects of the exotic, ancient beauty and mystery that marks this land as destinctly as an oasis marks a dessert.

Personally, I've found the Moroccans to be warm, friendly, welcoming (they know the word for 'welcome,' it seems, in infinate languages), and nonjudemental of westerners. I,ve found the women seem to be moderately if not liberally integrated into society. Blue jeans, make up, giggles and bit of sass seem to be perfectly accepted - mostly among the younger generation. Not to paint an inacurate picture either, not uncommon were the 'wemon in black' with just the sliver between the nose and brows exposed to give sight to their cultural origins.

I am at once, intrigued and in disbelief, relieved and watchful, eager and hessitant to see what this visit will bring us.
