Our layover in Miami is 6 hours, which leads us to briefly consider grabbing a cab to the Clevelander Hotel. A hotel in South Beach legendary for hosting epic good times. It's run by a former San Diegan (no coincidence).

Okay, I can't resist telling this story. This San Diegan is one of those guys that is a vortex of fun. He attracts fun, he creates fun, he transfuses fun into those around him. One night, some hoteliers from Florida met him and said, "We need a guy like you in South Beach". He now runs the Clevelander. At least that's how I heard it.
Clevelander Calculus
8:00AM Cab to South Beach from MIA: $60
Cocktails at the Clevelander: $40 (What? We're on Vacation!)
Missing our connecting flight to Guatemala: Not gonna happen
We bag the idea of cocktails at the Clevelander. South Beach is about nightlife not dawn patrol.
Over the next few hours we become intimately familiar with the international terminal at MIA. We board our flight to GUA at 11:20AM Dec 12. If you count the drive from San Diego to LA we're 6 hours (allowing for time changes) shy of traveling for 24 hours straight, and we haven't even left the US.
