This weekend we participated in an undergraduate research symposium in Washington DC (or near DC, right by the airport). I have been to research conferences before but not one specifically for undergraduate students. The atmosphere was a lot more lax, and students were not all fully dressed up in suits. I preferred it this way because I left all my nice suits and pants at school because I will be interviewing for graduate school in the winter.
There were several talks about networking and graduate school preparation... I presented my project today, and it was very well received. During meals and in between sessions, people tended to hang out with others from their program, but I attempted to mingle and sit with different groups. I met a guy who went to one of my best friends' high school-- he was overly excited about the connection. Then there were guys doing biomedical research at NYU, with whom I played pool in the evening. I am NOT good at pool at all, as in I have attempted maybe three times in my life. But somehow I won twice. I don't know. Maybe it was the vodka tonic?
