The east side of Zion is totally different from the west side. Checkerboard Mesa is situated along Zion-Mount Carmel Highway near the park's east entrance. Erosion has accentuated the texture of ancient sandunes and the stress fractures of uplift. In addition, fractures in the Navajo Sandstone of Zion’s cliffs promote the formation of huge blind arches. Iron oxide (rust) from the formation above streaks the sandstone red.
Big Horn sheep are also prevalent on the east side of Zion NP. It only took us 4 months through 4 states for us to see big horn sheep.
