This drive should have been 2 hours, but with the restrictions on Scenic Highway 9's Zion Mount Carmel Tunnel, I was forced to take an alternate route. The Zion Mount Carmel Tunnel was built in the late 1920's and was built for direct access from Bryce Canyon National Park and Grand Canyon National Park to Zion National Park. Now big rigs are restricted inside the tunnel. Rangers are posted at both ends of the tunnel to convert two-way tunnel traffic to one-way for large vehicles. This service for which a $15 dollar fee is charged is to ensure safe travel through the tunnel. Size restrictions are any vehicle over 13ft- 1in high and over 50 ft long. My 5th wheel with truck is 54ft long and trailer height is 13ft - 3in. This is the reason for the alternate route which was 3 hours long.
