The Red Canyon is located north of Bryce and is considered the first viewpoint of the Highway 12 Scenic Byway. The Claron Limestone Formations built from sediments of a lake that covered this region 35-50 million years ago gives the Red Canyon its brilliantly colored hoodoos. The pink, orange, and red tones come from oxidized iron in limestone - in other words, rust. Color hues depend on the amount of iron in the rock.
Today, we decided to hike the Buckhorn, Golden Wall, and Tunnel Trails. It totaled 7 miles and ranged from moderate to strenuous. Views were spectacular and well worth it.
