Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West. Sheer-walled canyons, towering monoliths, soaring eagles, and a spectacular road reflect the environment and history of the plateau-and-canyon country.
The many sheer-walled canyons were carved primarily by the erosive force of flood waters flowing over the plateau for millions of years. Recent rockfalls demonstrate that water, wind, and frost continue to cut the canyons wider and deeper today.
Historic Rim Rock Drive offers 23 miles of breathtaking panoramic views and numerous overlooks. The road is inseparable from the identity of the monument. There are 19 viewpoints, and 14 hiking trails along this scenic drive.
