Amistad (Spanish word for "friendship") National Recreation Area (NRA) is the United States portion of International Amistad Reservoir, formed on the Rio Grande along the border of the U.S. and Mexico. The reservoir was created for flood control, water storage, power generation, and recreation in 1969 with the creation of the Amistad dam. The park offers excellent water sports, fishing, birding, canoeing, and bow hunting.
Upstream, the Amistad NRA boundry continues to follow the international boundry, which is mid-channel in the Rio Grande. The Rio Grande separates the United States from Mexico.
