Government Canyon State Natural Area is an 8,622 acre, undeveloped stretch of land protecting a portion of the aquifer's recharge zone. Nearly 40 miles of trails range from remote rugged canyon lands to gentile rolling prairies. The canyon was on the "Joe Johntson" Road from San Antonio to Bandera which was blazed by the military at Ft. Sam Houston in the 1850s. The canyon is a part of the rich ranching history of Texas.
We hiked 9 miles enjoying the serenity of the wildflowers, Mountain Laurels, Live Oaks, and Spanish Moss on the 3 mile Savannah Loop and the more rugged 6 mile terrain of rocks which began on the Joe Johnson trail and ended at the Canyon Overlook trail looking down into Government Canyon.
