In 1982, Lady Bird Johnson along with actress Helen Hayes founded the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center to protect and preserve North America's native plants and natural landscapes. The Center exists to introduce people to the beauty and versatility of wildflowers and other native plants.
Decades ago, Mrs. Johnson recognized that our country was losing its natural landscapes and beauty. As much as 30% of the world’s native flora is at risk of extinction. The Wildflower Center is intended to help conserve the biological richness of North America. To Mrs. Johnson it was clear that native plants are critical to regional identity – they tell us where we are in this great country.
Under her influence, the President passed multiple laws protecting wildflowers and the environment. He also passed bills beautifying the environment by planting trees and flowers.
