Churchill Downs is the home of thoroughbred horse racing. It opened in 1875 and celebrated its 135th anniversary in 2009. The race occurs the 1st Saturday in May each year. It's followed by famous Preakness then Belmont Stakes races. If the horse comes in 1st in all 3 races, they receive the triple crown. Few achieve this honor.
The winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd) of the Kentucky Derby share $2 million. The 1st place receives 60%. Churchill Downs seats 50,000 and 100,000 standing room only. Seats range from $50 to $1,000.
