Naxos was very cool, we had heard about a hostel/hotel (All rooms are hotels in the greek isles) that was supposed to be run by the nicest people ever. So we were expecting good things....and this place came through. They offered us FRESH homemade wine! and FRESH homemade cheese right when we walked in the door...after picking us up from the port of course. The room was great, big, kitchen...and dirt cheap. NAXOS is the biggest of the cyclade greek islands and its the greenest as well. We rented a scooter our first day and took off all over this massive island. The roads wind around beautiful cliffs and desert like land with the ocean just in view. Amazing! No traffic as well, one car every 15mins of driving! There are crazy tiny lizards all over the place as well and they scurry about whenever you pass them. We stopped at this gigantic unfinished statue, which was pretty incredible, carved out of marble it was 10-12 metres tall! Unreal. Then we took off and the landscape changed even more red rocks and more desert like. The next day we took off for the beaches, the beaches near our city were sparsley packed but very beautiful. Clear water, great sand..but we ahd heard from our great hosts that better un packed beaches were in a small town a ways away. So we got on the scooter (ol' scooty) and took off. The beaches were insane! Empty! The sand was great...Christine went for a swim....and me...well..I went into the water....and swam for 1 second. hahaha. Anyways..it was scorching hot and great. We made pasta dishes everynight and had drinks. Sure enough a couple of days into our stay, we were offered more wine and cheese...this time evener more fresh! Made that day! So gooood. We really enjoyed having tv in these places in greece...ah good ol tv. Sure enough when we went to leave the owner had a gift for us! They were amazing. We were taking off to Santorini again..to catch a flight back to London. Rummy was played again and again...and that was that. Naxos was def the best greek island for myself...beautiful and not overly touristy.
