So Tabaski, one of the biggest holidays here was pretty interesting.  We killed three rams in honor of the story of Abraham who was going to sacrifice his son to God but then at the last moment God switched the son for a sheep and the son was saved.  I spent all day cleaving and eating these three sheep and boy am I sick of sheep.  It was kind of like being back in high school biology class what with all the disecting going on and believe me we used everything and ate every part....sheep testicals taste kind of like boiled turkey.  Anyhow here is a little Christmas poem that basically sums up my Village Christmas:  I wish everyone a very Happy Holiday season!

Twas the night before Christmas
and all through the compound
Creatures were stirring
And making many sounds

I haven't a stocking
but I do have a tree
with tinsle and paper snowflakes
I wish you could see

My 15 family members are sleeping
sharing thier beds
visions of roasted sheep at Tabaski
Dance in thier heads

As for me , well I'm nestled
As snug as can be
Thinking of you all dearly
This Christmas Eve

Tomarrow will be
An interesting day
It won't feel like Christmas
But I'll try anyway
I've got a brightly colored dress
Its pretty red and green
If you saw me you'd laugh, perhaps
Because yes its complete with a bright red head wrap

I'll be trying to cook
Christmas goodies and food
But without an oven
Things might look a bit crude
But as long as there's sugar
and my campish like stove
Candied treats are possible
And even without chocolate, hopefully eatable

I've got peanut butter fudge
and Nutella fondu
No-bake cookies and mint taffy too
I'll try to make eggnog and peanut brittle
No apple cider, so bissap wassel in the kettle

A cookie crumb crust with homemade lemon filling
I forgot to bring Christmas music so I guess I'll just sing:
"Up on th rooftop Santa falls
because the roof is made of straw!"

I'm going to share some traditions
with my dear family here
Bring out the Christmas cactus
And make snowflakes appear
Share the sweet goodies
and pour virgin boissons (drinks)
There won't be a pink Christmas ham
So thank God I'm not sick of riz et poisson (rice and fish)

It's going so fast these Africa years
In March my year mark will be here
So celebrate, eat, toast and sing
I'm there with you in spirit
Jing Jingle ling Jing

I miss each one of you
with all my might
"Merry Christmas to all
and to all a good night!"

Happy Winter
Oh, Merry Christmas Desneige! Enjoy the uniqueness of celebrating with friends who are celebrating the holiday for the first time.

It was so wonderful to talk with you the other day. You sound great! It was so good to hear your voice and share experiences.

I hope you had a SUPER solstice.

Love to you!
Amelia

Happy New Year!
Desneige!

I am so happy that I got to talk to you on New Year's Eve. We missed you terribly at the party- we were all totally confused when it came time to pass out numbers. We suggested that Perry had to represent you, but instead Mrs. Jarrell attempted to do it. Instead of counting the number of people, she chose an abritrary number so we kept having to skip over numbers... Gretchen tried to round up all the troops under the tree, but again just didn't work as well- people were still eating in other rooms and not paying attention and such. My mom totally cheated, saying that she was number 33, when 30 was the highest number. Liz brought out her claws of death during the game, as per usual. The highlight of the gifts was a blinking red nose and antlers. But, afterward your Dad read your poem. Everyone was gathered and really enjoyed it- a beautiful Christmas Story!

Anyway, my dear, I hope that you have a great new year and that this experience is all that you were anticipating it to be. Everyone missed your energy over the holidays, but I know that you are enjoying yourself and that is all that matters!

love you,
laura

waaw!
very good, really good! didn't know you were a writer! you spent all your time reading but i didn't know you were writing.
However, it's not only beds that are shared here in Senegal, no not only beds, every thing's shared here: thoughts, shoes, clothes, spoons, and even souls in a certain manner. And sometimes, you can find more than 15 member in a family, like mine. which makes noiser. we like noise, you know, and we like we like overcrowded families, and the facts is because everyone stay at home no mmutter how old, rich or matire he is.
it's may be to late to wish you merry Christams, but let me wish it you 4 the coming one!
