Following the Natchez (local Indian tribe) Trace (old trail) through some beautiful scenery and historic locations (the Natchez Trace finishes in Nashville, Tennessee) we head North West up the Mississippi Delta where there are cornfields as far as the eye can see and finally call it a day at a tiny town called Leland. We settle on what we think is the best of the worst accommodation and go to the liquor shop. When we ask what there is to do in town, the reply is "get your alcohol, go back to your room and lock the door!" There seem to be a lot of cars arriving at the motel to say a quick hi to the manager, not sure what that means? A couple of locals wander along and say hi ... we have now met 'Catman' and John, Catman plays his harmonica periodically, they're a funny couple of blokes, and very switched on even though they are pretty magotted. We ask about local blues joints but their directions are all over the place and I don't think they can read. We ask about the joint down the street called 'Po-Boys Pool hall' They tell us that they're not welcome there, we head down there to get dinner. There is only the owner and a handful of customers there, we settle in and have the best roll ever. A Po-boy or Poor Boy is like a baguette filled with cooked meats, salad & sauces, also known as a 'Hoagie' in other areas. We get a lot of information from the locals there, they are very friendly and are intrigued with Australia. Sometimes it's hard to get the conversation back to us milking them for info! We pay our tab, $30 for dinner & maybe four rounds of drinks. The drinks did the trick, otherwise I don't think I could have slept given the surroundings. The morning saw us leave fairly quickly, not even wanting to use the basin to clean teeth (bottled water and the garden was more hygienic than the bathroom)
