What I did
solo ride

OK, so Camrose, not a very long trip from Edmonton, however for me it is around trip of approx 180 km.  I take the long way through secondary roads to one of my favorite watering holes, O'Shea's Eatery where they make the best bread pudding with whiskey sauce!

However, this trip I didn't stop in for a snack.

I was enjoying the ride and thinking about a question that motorcyclists get asked the most often.

Why do you ride?

I just feel in love with the open road and the sense of freedom!  I enjoy the solitude of my helmet, just me, my thoughts and prayers.  I would have to say that I am not keen on group rides or the social aspect of riding a motorcycle.  The concept of riding for an hour and a half and then stopping for a snack or coffee with a group of motorcyclists just doesn't appeal to me.

First of all, to me group riding isn't always the safest activity.  Yes, there is safety in numbers and the more the merrier, however in the few group rides I have been involved in, I find that folks just don't pay attention.  Next thing you are squealing to a stop to avoid bumping into the person in front of you!  It seems to be the same in every group, you have to fill up with gas, no one just takes their time, everyone seems to be in a rush for the gas pump. But that is just my opinion based on limited group riding experience.

I enjoy riding because it is a personal choice.  I am not riding because it something my spouse enjoys and a great way of spending time together.

I think the thing that appealed to me the most, was the ride on the secondary roads of Alberta.  I would have to say that I have seen more of Alberta during my motorcycle rides in the last 3 years than I had driving in my car for the last 30 years.  Alberta in the summer is a wonderful Province to explore.  I won't go into winter in Alberta because instead of rambling about it, it would become a rant!  I hate Alberta winters!

Last year, I put just over 13,000 km on my motorcycle and I hadn't left Alberta.  This year, I am planning a trip to Vancouver, BC.  I am not sure I will top the riding I did last year, since my life is in a bit of a transition, but a little time on the road in the stillness of my helmet is worth more than spending money on therapy!  Well except massage therapy!

I like to ride alone, it is a personal choice.  I like being on my own time schedule, going where I feel like going.  Stopping for a snack or to take a picture where or if I feel like it.

I know this is a travel log and though my motorcycle trips don't take me anywhere exotic (at least for the time being), please bear with me and if you would like follow along with me in real time with my SPOT GPS MESSENGER
