This trip was truly excellent.  It really helped a lot of history come alive.  We got to see Thomas Jefferson's Monticello (the one that appears on the nickel), James Monroe's Ashlawn Highland and visit Colonial Williamsburg.  In and around Colonial Williamsburg is a really nice, relaxing environment.  The colonial part of town is dedicated to preserving history complete with reenactors in period clothing, buildings, oxen, candle makers, colonial food, the whole 9 yards.  We also got to see the battle site at Yorktown, Virginia where the Revolutionary war ended when Washington cornered Cornwallis with his back to the James river.  Another huge highlight was seeing the site where the very first settlers came ashore a little over 400 years ago at Jamestown.  It was really special sitting there on the shore and feeling the wind on my face and just looking out into the sea trying to imagine what it was like.
