A hellish bus ride later we arrived in Santiago de Cuba as the sun rose.  The hustle and bustle around the bus terminal was crazy but our taxi drive came looking for us and we were away before we new it.

Maria who ran the Casa was lovely and let us have a spare room, as we had arrived so early.  So we got a few hour kip and then headed into town to explore.

We were quite surprised to find the city center was really quite small and I think we managed to see most of the sights in the first day.  The old town has the colonial air of most of the major cities but time has run its course here and modernization is everywhere, which gives it more lived in feel.

The highlight for us was the Carnival Museum, which although is quite small they had a performance group giving us a flavour of what the carnival in Santiago would be like.  Its was very entertaining and as usual Liz was up on stage with the dancers... I think she missed her vocation and should have been on stage!  Would you believe I'm the reserved one on this trip!

We decided that we had more time than expected to booked a hire car to take us to Baracoa over on the east coast.  The guide book told us it was quite unique as up until 1960's there wasn't a road there!

We spent the rest of the afternoon in the roof garden on top of the Casa Granda Hotel, writing post cards and drinking Mojitos in the sunshine.  Mmmmm :)

I wouldn't say James was reserved! ;) As for me it was all Ron and his mates' fault... Ron and Cola, Mojito and Margarita that is!
