Secrets of the Red Lantern Tour

Whistlestop tour of Singapore, and catching up on some well need shut-eye! I don't think we've ever been that tired! Our hostel is very sweet, really clean and lots of free drinks, internet and even use of their iPad. The weather is hot and humid, and the air smells of food. Yesterday we went on a river cruise, we were both very tired and I (Liz) managed to fall asleep on the boat - I opened my eyes long enough to look at the impressive buildings and statues, then conked out again! There are sooo many McDonalds here - we've avoided them so far :) we went to one of the hundreds of veggie restaurants today, Ci Yang in Smith Street. Five items on the menu and a very characterful host who assured James whatever he ate and no matter how much it tastes of meat, don't worry it's not! Ha I laughed, if only he knew how much James was wishing the mock crab was actually crab! Going to try the no1 tomorrow if we have time - an indian restaurant in Little India.

Went to the Night Zoo last night - the Night Safari was unique, we loved the Creatures of the Night show and the tram ride was great as we were still exhausted from the flight and staying up until Singapore evening, I think we were up for over 36 hours in total! The tapirs and leopards were great but the bat enclosure was probably the most memorable, face to face with fruit bats, and a flying fox was right on cue to jump as we went through his enclosure.

Tonight James had suggested we go on the "Secrets of the Red Lantern" tour of Chinatown. Absolutely fascinating 2hr guided walk with Pauline, who was really lovely. The tour was largely centred on the history of Singapore, the brothels, opium houses, slave trade and worst of all, the British involvement! We were even taken to one of the five red light districts and a real live prostitute pointed out for us (although secretly we think she was someone's mum)! Really sad and really interesting at the same time!
